Editorial Policy

As urban Midwesterners, we’ve got a chip on our collective shoulder and something to prove. The Cleveland Review is a biannual exploration into the Rust Belt psyche – one part slack-jawed enthusiasm, two parts nonchalant despair, with a dash of humor, bile, and whatever else churns up from our dark underbelly. We aim to showcase regional talent in fiction, literary nonfiction, poetry, photography, illustration, and anything else that piques our interest. We’re also interested in exploring the unique possibilities that internet publishing affords. If you have an idea that pairs multimedia effects with creative content we are interested in hearing from you — particularly if you have the technical acumen to execute it.
Feel free to submit any previously unpublished works for our consideration. Simultaneous submissions are permitted but not encouraged. Let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere so that we can withdraw the submission and extend our congratulations.
The editorial staff will consider anything, but be forewarned — most genre fiction will find kinder eyes elsewhere. If you have a piece that doesn’t fit into a traditional category, be not dismayed. If your work is original and your technique sound then we will find a place for it.
There are no minimum or maximum word count restrictions, although we gently suggest that you keep your submission’s length to something not onerous to read on a website, ideally less than 5,000 words.
We reserve the right to reject submissions for any or no reason.
We will publish whatsoever pleases us, no matter how bad, and reject whatever we wish, no matter how good. When you submit your work you maintain the copyright, but you are authorizing us to share your work in The Cleveland Review, either immediately or at a later date.
Above all, for God’s sake, titillate us.
